Sounds of a Downtown Evening

The voices are loud and grating, cutting across the summer evening.

As I close windows to close out the noise, I eye the mauve cloud-shapes hanging motionless in the sky.

At the last window, I hear the familiar birdcall, an undertone to the cacophony. I pause, caught within the dichotomy.
