Split-Second Story: Deus te Ajude

At six, he is perpetually filthy – and hungry.

Unseen, he scampers off a boat. Slipping into the shadows he watches the shiny cars. Briefly, his brother forgets him, and he daydreams.

But the inevitable whistle rouses fear and guilt and sends him back to work.

“Please: a few rand, Ma’am?”
