Do I Know You?

A bright and sunny day

With no shadows in which to hide

Not even under the trees.

A man stands on the corner of the street

In this neighbourhood

His eyes averted

To somewhere and nowhere

At the same time.

There is something

Strange

He does not belong here.

He turns his face,

The brim of his straw hat

Hiding his identity,

His glasses reflecting back

The blank sky

To anyone who would look.

His is an eternally familiar face

He is everyman

All at once.

Everyman you fear

Everyman from whom you turn

He could be Danger

Or

He could be just

Any

Other

Man

On a street corner.

Innocent,

Waiting for a friend

Or a taxi.

But he is not.

He is waiting for you.
