A Bird’s Tragedy

Why oh why

do innocent birds fall

from the sky

Take a wrong turn and then,

Misguided,

Overfly?

Curled up toes

and ruffled feathers,

eyes closed in deep repose,

little tufts of yellow strewn

across the autumn rose.

The bird lies quietly on the ground,

as the barn cats step

distastefully around.
